There are many reasons you may consider changing your childs school, but often, parents dont act on these instincts. Many parents are afraid to trade the devil they know for the one they dont know. Even though a child may be unhappy, struggling academically, or feeling under-challenged, parents typically are worried about their childs transition. If the child is not thriving, parents often think it could be worse in a different environment. If a child is thriving in certain respects for example, socially but not academically parents may be concerned about recreating a positive social life in a new school. While I generally view mid-course adjustments as a good thing, I never advocate changing schools before first trying to work with the teacher, the guidance counselor, and even the head of school to rectify the situation. And, if a child shows prolonged misery before going to school, frequently feigns illness, vomits, is unusually tearful, or has major appetite or sleep changes, things may be serious enough to consult a professional. A change of school is not necessarily the answer, and should not be made without addressing the other issues. In this post, I will address times that a change may be a good idea, and also seek to dispel some of the myths that prevent parents from acting. Why change your childs school: A child may attend a school that doesnt suit his or her learning style. Some children learn best in a structured environment where the teacher directs learning. Other children do their best by learning concepts through experience. If you find that your childs learning style is mismatched with the schools philosophy, you may be trying to fit a round peg into a square hole and a transfer may be worthwhile. Many schools are ill equipped to handle a child who is not mainstream not only academically, but on any dimension. Not every private school has resources to deal with children who have special educational needs. On the other side of the spectrum, profoundly gifted children may not receive the support they need to prosper when teachers focus on children who are not doing well. You may wish to consider a change of school based on your childs interests. Often, when parents choose the first school, they know little about their child. As his/her interests develop, the school s/he attends may not offer courses or extracurricular activities that will support his or her growth. Your child may not fit in socially. Every school, and each cohort within a school, has a personality. If your child isnt accepted or is bullied, these are issues, first, to be addressed with the school administration. However, sometimes s/he will fit in better in a different environment where s/he can find a more natural peer group. If a family moves to a new area, distance can be a good reason to change schools. Not only is the school far away, spending time with friends or participating in sports and cultural activities can be an effort. Finally, if a child requests to change schools, take this very seriously. Few children want to make a significant life change unless they really are out of step. When my daughter started high school and came home saying it isnt cool to be smart here, we honored her desire to change schools and she had a wonderful high school experience as a result. If an educational change makes sense for any of these reasons, dont be afraid to make the switch. Parents often think it is impossible to get a place in a school in a non-entry-level grade. This simply isnt true. People move from one city or country to another, families move from the city to the suburbs or vice versa, and chance vacancies occur. There may not be the same number of options as there are during an entry-level year, but the competition isnt as fierce either. Children are resilient. While we never like to see our children go through difficult times, flexibility and the ability to adapt to new environments are valuable skills to teach children and an important part of their education. Changing a childs school when things arent working teaches them problem-solving skills. What Instruments Do You Need for a Jazz Band Shanika Jazz is an exciting and rewarding genre for all types of musicians to study and play. If you’ve developed proficiency on your instrument, you might be interested in starting a jazz band. One of the beautiful things about playing jazz is that it can be performed with any number or combination of instruments, from a solo pianist all the way up to a full orchestra! Most “traditional” jazz ensembles usually consist of a harmonic element (like piano or guitar), bass (which can fall under both harmonic and rhythmic), and a rhythmic element (drums or percussion). Many groups also add a melodic instrument like saxophone or trumpet.  Let’s look at the function these jazz band instruments play in a jazz ensemble, and also some additional instruments and combos that can make jazz a rich, intense, and expressive musical style. Jazz Duos Trios and Quartets There are many interesting and diverse combinations of jazz band instruments. Makoto Ozone and Gary Burton have been creating and performing jazz duets for two decades on piano and vibraphone. Other musicians such as Bhob Rainey and Greg Kelley have been pushing the jazz envelope with their duet called nmperign. Rainey plays soprano sax and Kelley is an amazing trumpet virtuoso. Together they play free improvisational jazz that can range from stark and sparse to frenetic and dense. A duet can be almost any combination of instruments. Piano and sax, organ and vocals, or even trumpet and sax are all great combos for jazz. The trio is a more “traditional” arrangement for jazz. It usually consists of piano or guitar along with bass and drums. This combination is strong and gives harmonic and melodic expression through the piano or guitar along with a solid foundation and rhythm from the bass and drums. This type of ensemble is going to sound more recognizable to the listener and can perform a wide range of music from jazz standards to arrangements of pop or rock tunes done in the jazz style. Check out the Brad Mehldau Trio for some amazing jazz arrangements of pop tunes. The classic jazz group is the quartet. Add a horn to the traditional jazz trio and you have a whole new sound. With the quartet grouping you add an element of melodic harmony to the sound.   Adding a melodic instrument like the sax or trumpet can create interesting counterpoint elements. Check out John Coltrane’s classic quartet as an amazing example of this kind of grouping. Quintets and Beyond Taking the classic quartet to the next level means adding a second horn player to complement the first. If a sax player fronts your quartet, for example, add a trumpet. The extra horn allows for a wider range of harmony and depth. Miles Davis had a series of amazing quintets throughout the 50s and 60s that changed the face of jazz music and launched the careers of John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter, who both went on to front their own combos. Beyond the quintet, the sky is the limit. Bigger groups allow for more stunning composition, richer harmonies, and an expanded timbre pallet for the music. Many musicians have written and performed with larger ensembles, including Charles Mingus and John Coltrane. Additional jazz band instruments you can add to fill out the sound include trombone, baritone sax, percussion, electronic keyboards, or even strings, like violin or cello. You are only limited by the availability of musicians and your ability to arrange music for a larger ensemble. During the 1930s through the late 1970s, the jazz big band was king. The typical big band consisted of a rhythm section of piano, bass, drums, and guitar, along with five saxophones (two altos, two tenors, and a baritone that commonly doubled on flute and clarinet), five trumpets, and four trombones. Big bands are still popular today, such as New Yorks Mingus Big Band. Getting Started If you are interested in starting a jazz combo, the best advice is to start small. Find other musicians who play typical jazz band instruments. If you play piano, find a horn player you like working with and start by developing a duo repertoire. Once youre comfortable playing together, add a bass player and drummer and grow into a quartet.  Maybe add a second horn player to expand your musical palette. Give your template a descriptive name. Pen pals will see the name on their dashboards. If you want to try a ready-made template, click “Import” from the example tab. As the teacher and moderator of a pen pal exchange, you must define the following: Your instructions to the student One or more topics The minimum number of words How many errors you will tolerateâ€"warning: foreign names can trigger false alarms, so it is wise to tolerate a couple. What target vocabulary you want to see and the minimum number of them you expect to see Whether you require or allow photos and audio recordings Step 2:  Click on “Groups.” Click “New” to create a group. You can right-click on the link to copy the URL and send it to your students via email, Facebook, or whatever method you want. Here are some PowerPoint slides showing students what to expect when the join a group on the Pen Pal Exchange. Optional:  Click on “Groups” again. Click “Share link.” This will generate a link that you can send to another teacher. That teacher will be able to import the students from your group to match them with pen pals in his or her groups. In this way, you can create meaningful exchanges between students at other schools taught by different teachers. Step 5:  Click on “Groups” again. Click “Assign pen pal guests.” This is how you match up pen pals within a group or from different groups. A pen pal “guest” is a student who can reply to a post written by a pen pal host, the student who hosts the exchange. In other words, you will be able to add one or more students as guests to each exchange. Guests and hosts will be notified by email of any new messages posted on the exchanges they are assigned to.   Step 6:  Click on “Groups” again. His friend spoke about the remarkable progress students make through the tutoring sessions, not only in their math skills but also in their confidence. Bill works with a second grader and a third grader each week at Billingsville Leadership Academy. Why did you become a volunteer? Like a lot of people, I wanted to be invested in the Charlotte community but didnt know where to start. Heart provides an opportunity for someone like me, who doesnt know the first thing about math tutoring, to make a direct impact on a critical area of need. What was your favorite moment from working with students? Definitely playing War, or any other competitive game.   My students really enjoy a little competition, and it is so much fun watching them focused and engaged in developing their math skills to beat me.   And most of the time they do! What would you tell someone who is  thinking about becoming a volunteer? It will be one of the best hours of your week.
